Coffee

The scientific evidence strongly suggests that regular consumption of coffee and tea can help protect the liver against the harmful effects of a poor diet. Through multiple mechanisms including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions, these beverages appear to reduce liver enzyme levels, slow fibrosis progression, and decrease the risk of liver-related mortality. While they shouldn’t be viewed as a license to maintain unhealthy eating habits, coffee and tea represent accessible, enjoyable, and evidence-based additions to a liver-conscious lifestyle.

Over the past decades, the modern diet has shifted in many unhealthy ways. Our consumption of sugary processed foods that virtually lack nutrients paved the way for the development of a condition called fatty liver disease.Fatty liver disease results from the excessive accumulation of fat within the liver cells and when left uncontrolled can lead to scarring and fibrosis

However, tea is the number one most consumed drink in the world while coffee follows a close second place behind it. When it comes to drinking these beverages, many only think of the pleasure each cup can offer without giving a thought of the health benefits the drinks possess. These two are a perfect fit for you as a drink choice. According to a recent study published in the Journal of Hepatology, drinking tea or coffee may protect your liver against liver fibrosis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

In the study, researchers analyzed the data gathered from over 2,424 participants and found that the group who drank 3 cups of tea or coffee per day showed lower liver stiffness values compared to those who did not drink the beverages.

Researchers involved in the study pointed out that although the exact mechanism on how coffee and tea consumption protects the liver is still unknown, they theorized that it may be related to the antioxidant effects found in the drink.Whichever the case, it only gives us more reasons to sit back and enjoy a warm cup of coffee or tea all for ourselves.
